The 2009 Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) organized by Shri Jagannath Temple Trust was celebrated with great pomp and religious fervour over the weekend.

The annual Jagannath festival is currently being re-enacted at Brampton's Hindu Sabha Mandir (9225 The Gore Road).

Amidst prayer chants and ecstatic spiritual devotion, the extravagantly decorated chariot hosting the idols of Lord Jagannath, brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra was drawn from the Bharat Sevashram, Etobicoke, to the Hindu Sabha Mandir, Brampton.

The Rath Yatra dates back several thousand years to a unique tradition in Puri, Orissa. Full of spectacle and colour, the festival leads to one of the largest religious congregations in the world symbolizing universal love and brotherhood.

Millions of devotees join hands to pull the massive chariots of their deities over a three-kilometre distance (and this has given rise to the English word 'juggernaut').

All are welcome to witness the deities now residing at the Hindu Sabha. The deities return to Bharat Sevashram Sunday, July 5.

The temple also held a 1,008 Maha Havan ceremony recently, which proved popular.

Meanwhile the courts are believed to have instructed the current board to continue running the temple's day-to-day affairs until further notice.
