Masala! Mehndi!Masti! (M!M!M!) kicked off its annual free festival with a gala reception last week at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre at the Exhibition Place in Toronto.
With the support of various sponsors including Etihad Airways, Mobilicity, Omni television, The Westin Harbour Hotel, Tim Horton's, Toyota, State Farm and a multitude of government agencies and media partners, M!M!M! was able to bring in four major headliners this year, along with over 70 other performers, to wow the crowds for three days Jul 23-25.
Popular Bollywood actor Boman Irani, who recently won three awards for his role in '3 idiots,' was the headliner for the M!M!Movies! segment. Boman and his wife Zenobia harboured no false airs and wowed the attending public. A retrospective of Boman's movies was also screened at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
For the opening night headline, sarod supremos Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan accompanied by Toronto's tabla player Vineet Vyas entranced the sizeable audience with classical Indian music.
Saturday was action-packed, kicking off with the first ever seniors' idol contest where several seniors showed off their musical prowess.
Throughout the day there were power-packed performances, conversations with the artists, theatrical pieces and finally culminating with three headlining performances.
Salman Ahmad, founder of one of South Asia's biggest rock bands, Junoon, and also known as 'Pakistan's Bono,' rocked the Bandshell grounds, as he sang his favourites prompting screams of delight from the gals and shouts of approval from the guys as everybody joined in chorus with this Dada of South Asian rock.
Next came on Boman Irani, in an improvised act, strumming on a guitar, along with many of Toronto's children, to sing 'Give Me Some Sunshine' from the super hit movie '3 idiots'. The crowds went wild as they joined in with gusto. At this performance, the Government of Canada conferred Boman with a citation for his contribution to the arts.
The final call was Suzanne D'Mello, one of India's hottest rising playback singers, who has sung several hit songs in 'Ghajini.' 'Dhoom 2,' 'Slumdog Millionaire,' 'Kites' and many more movies. She set the crowds on fire even as they dubbed her 'India's Queen Latifah!' It was an evening of pure dynamite.
On Sunday, there were many more performances. The seniors' idol contest winners were awarded their prizes. Ramesh Panchal, 67, won the Senior 65+ Desi Idol competition. At 83 years young, Manu Vyas placed second.
Later Flamenkathak wowed the visitors by showing them the similarities between Kathak and Flamenco. The three-day festival was brought to a close with a deafening bhangra session aptly named 'Bhangin' in the Park!'
Throughout the festival, Toronto's painters and artists displayed their works at M!M!M!'s perennial favourite - The Artists' Walkway.
And of course the popular Meena Bazaar was abuzz with activity as many indulged in their shopping impulses.
A 'khaana sutra' food lane replete with tastebud tantalizing delights from all over India and also from Thailand and Malaysia was added testament to the diversity of North America's largest multidisciplinary free South Asia inspired festival.
