Left-hand opening bat Ruvindu Gunasekera's solid innings of 57 not out steered Canada to victory over Afghanistan in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup qualifier at Maple Leaf Cricket Club, King City, over the weekend.
Left-arm spinner Hiral Patel took 3 wickets for 18, and off-spinner Nitish Kumar 3 for 36 as Afghanistan was bowled out for 165 in the 41st over.
Darius D'Souza chipped in with 36 runs to ensure this success for Canada, but the biggest winner was the friendly rivalry and community spirit that owed much to a strong presence from the local Afghan-Canadian population.
In other action, Ireland's Paul Stirling hit a mighty 164 and Graham McDonnell 74 not out in a 291 run win over Vanuatu. The friendly Pacific islanders tumbled to 82 all out facing a massive target of 374 runs to win, leaving the Irish as tournament champions.
Hong Kong was edged out by one wicket in a tightly fought match with the US, but the narrow defeat proved enough to see Hong Kong capture the last of the six spots in the 2010 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.
Dutch hopes of a U19 CWC spot were dented by a century from Papua New Guinea's Heni Staka.
Canada joins Ireland, PNG, Afghanistan, the US and Hong Kong for the finals of the U19 CWC to be played in New Zealand.
